KDF-55 and calcium sulfite do genuinely different jobs here, which is why the cartridge uses both instead of just activated carbon. KDF-55 is a copper-zinc alloy that works by redox — a chemical reaction that converts chlorine into harmless chloride as water passes through, rather than adsorbing it the way carbon does. That reaction stays effective at showering temperatures, which is exactly why it's the media of choice here: activated carbon's chlorine-adsorption capacity drops off noticeably in hot water, the opposite of what a shower needs. It's the reason this cartridge isn't just a smaller version of what's under your kitchen sink — it's built for the temperature it actually has to work at.

The skin argument for this isn't just marketing. Chlorine strips the skin and scalp's natural oils and disrupts surface pH, and a study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that switching to filtered shower water measurably improved skin hydration and reduced roughness and redness in women with dry, sensitive skin. That's a real, if modest, effect — not a claim that chlorine is dangerous, just that removing it from the water touching your skin for ten minutes a day does something measurable.

Worth being direct about what this cartridge doesn't do. KDF-55 and activated carbon work by chemical reaction and adsorption, not by physically blocking anything the way a membrane does — there's no pore here fine enough to stop bacteria, and this product was never designed to. That's true of every shower and bathroom filter on our menu, and it's generally beside the point for shower water anyway, since you're not drinking it. If pathogen protection at the tap is what you're after, that's what our drinking water systems are for — this one is solving a different problem.

KDF-55 also picks up some heavy metals along the way — lead, mercury, and a few others — as a side effect of the same redox reaction, though it's a modest reduction and not something we'd build a claim around. If heavy metals are a specific concern for you, reverse osmosis is the tier that actually addresses it; this is a happy side effect, not this product's job.

The "20 stages" is the manufacturer's count, and it includes media like tourmaline and maifan stone that are marketed for a “softer feel” but have no established water-treatment function. We'd rather tell you that than repeat it. The chlorine and sediment reduction is real; that's what you're buying.
Water hardness in CDMX varies by which supply feeds your building — some areas get relatively soft Cutzamala water, others harder deep-well water. This filter is not a water softener and won't change your hardness either way.
